Home Run Derby will benefit CHOP and scholarship fund

The 10th annual Andrew Farrell Spirit of Courage Fund Home Run Derby will take place on Saturday, May 17, at George Washington High School. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., and the contest begins at 10. The cost is $25.

Proceeds go to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and to a scholarship for a Washington baseball player who best exemplifies Farrell on and off the field.

Farrell died in 2004 at age 21 after a long battle with leukemia. He was a popular pitcher/first baseman on Washington’s 2001 baseball team that went undefeated in the regular season. His №25 jersey was later retired.

In addition to the Home Run Derby, the fund raises money at an annual golf outing and at a beef-and-beer, which is scheduled for November.

Over the years, the fund has paid more than $30,000 to CHOP and more than $20,000 to scholarship recipients.
